Fly Fishing in Southwest Montana
Posted: May 24, 2023 by Kade Embry

As one of the most picturesque cities in Montana, Bozeman offers an idyllic setting for fly fishing enthusiasts from novice anglers to seasoned pros. With its abundant streams, rivers and mountain lakes, Bozeman and its surrounding areas provide fly-fishers with a bounty of opportunities to hook a variety of species that populate these fertile waters. In this article, we'll explore some of the best fly fishing locations in and around Bozeman, MT.

Madison River

One of the most famous fly-fishing systems in Montana, Madison River spans 140 miles and boasts over 2000 fish per mile in some areas. With its frequent hatches and healthy rainbow, cutthroat trout and brown, it's no wonder Madison sees so many anglers year-round. Flowing through the stunning Madison valley scenery, the river is perfect for float trips, wade fishing, or casting from the bank. The upper river has wider and deeper parts, while the lower river can be narrower with more riffles, making both settings entirely different.

Gallatin River

Located just a few miles outside Bozeman, Gallatin River is a year-round fishery with some of the area's largest rainbow trout. The river is ideal for intermediate to experienced anglers with its swift currents, riffles, deep pools, and pocket water. The Gallatin River is one of the most beautiful places to fish for beginners seeking solitude and breathtaking mental relaxation. Moreover, September and October are the best times for fly-fishing as the brown and rainbow trout move upstream.

Yellowstone River

Yellowstone River is the longest unrestricted river in the United States, and it flows through three different states. From Yellowstone National Park to Livingston, MT, the 173-mile river teems with brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout and offers some incredible scenery. A float trip in the river is a popular way to experience the waters, as guests have ample opportunity to craft their fly-fishing skills on this legendary fishing stream that also caters to whitefish, wall-eye, and sauger.

Helena Lakes

If you're looking to get off the beaten path, Helena National Forest offers a fantastic fly-fishing location. Among the gems of the forest are several impressive mountain lakes ideal for casting a line. Tucked in the forest with breathtaking views, the crystal clear waters of the Helena mountains where Rainbow, brown, brook, and native cutthroat trout live is peaceful and serene. Visitors can expect a more solitary experience fly fishing in Montana's Helena National Forest than in more popular river locations like the Gallatin and Madison.

Ennis Lake

Ennis Lake is the natural confluence of the Madison and Gallatin rivers, with an average depth of 18.9 feet. The lake stocks some trophy trout (Rainbow, cutthroat, and brown), but the anglers have to be patient. Anglers can get on the water at different spots from the lake access site with fish picking up both nymphs and streamers.

Bozeman is surrounded by world-class fly fishing opportunities that every angler will love to experience. With its fantastic streams, mountain lakes, and abundance of fish species, Bozeman is undoubtedly an angler's paradise waiting to be explored. Whether you're a novice or an experienced angler, there's something for everyone when it comes to fly fishing in this stunning Montana destination. So pack up your fishing gear and head to Bozeman, MT, for an unforgettable fly-fishing trip.
